Belarusian State University Dorm On Fire

The central switchboard near the BSU dorm #10 exploded on the March 11, 2004, at 20:40. The electricity switched off in the whole building as the wires were on fire. The most of the building was covered with smoke. According to some sources the bases of mobile operators which were situated in the building also were damaged.

The operative team of the dorm did not start the evacuation on time and it was not started before the coming of the fire brigade. Unconscious people were taken out of the stopped elevators. But according to the official information there are no victims. Furthermore, the exit to emergency stairs was closed or blocked with something, when the main exit was heavily covered with smoke. Many people remained in their rooms. Most brave were said to jump out of the windows.

Afterwards all the inhabitants of the “10” were directed to the dorm #3 were they had to stay till the midnight. The students’ were let to their dorm to spend the night and were sent to their homes the next day, their studies were stopped at least for a week till the time the dorm would be opened An interesting fact: a day before the accident all the dorms situated in the Gai (district in Miensk) were inspected by the director of the dorms of the University Bychkouski.
